Improve your engineering with advanced topology and shape optimisation

At PROSE, we specialise in calculating and optimising your bogie frame, carbody, or any other vehicle parts.

Are you struggling to meet strength requirements? Looking to explore weight reduction potential or reduce the required weld performance class? We can help.

Using topological optimisation, we determine the ideal material distribution and placement of strengthening elements in your design. For a more detailed optimisation, we set up a fully automated parameter study with all load combinations and assessment criteria according to EN 13749.

Our in-house software automatically generates various design variations within the maximum build space and calculates the utilisation for each specified element. With the help of optimisation solvers, we choose the ideal parameter set that meets the targeted optimisation criteria.

Whether you need to focus on specific sections and welds or the complete bogie frame, we’ve got you covered.
Take your vehicle design to the next level. Let PROSE’s expertise in optimisation guide your project to success. Contact us

Hydrogen’s role in the future of railways

Hydrogen fuel cell trains present an exciting opportunity for the rail industry, offering the ability to travel long distances independently of infrastructure and emitting only water and heat. This makes them a cleaner, greener alternative to diesel trains, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

However, several challenges must be addressed for widespread adoption:

  • Storage solutions: High-pressure or cryogenic tanks require advanced engineering to ensure safety.
  • Regulatory approval: Meeting stringent safety and performance standards is a complex process.
  • Safety measures: Robust protocols are essential for handling hydrogen, which is highly flammable.
  • Integration issues: Compatibility with existing rail systems and retrofitting older trains require meticulous planning.
  • Maintenance & training: Updating practices and training the workforce for new technologies is crucial.

In light of these challenges, PROSE and TÜV SÜD have partnered to drive forward the integration of hydrogen technology in railways, ensuring safety, efficiency, and innovation. By working together, we deliver a unified service to help you with authorisation and reduce all possible risks.

PROSE offers engineering and consulting services with unique expertise in railway technology. Our niche rolling stock experience and agile solutions ensure efficient project execution resulting in comprehensive turnkey solutions.

TÜV SÜD supports rail manufacturers, operators and authorities with a comprehensive portfolio of inspection, testing, certification and training services to ensure safe and secure as well as reliable and efficient railway transportation.

Our joint competencies in conventional, high-speed, metro and light rail are backed by over 50 years of experience working on global rail projects and our collaboration with railway authorities and stakeholders worldwide.

Project audit of the implementation of a depot management system

Customer: Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ), Switzerland; PSI Transcom GmbH, Germany / Switzerland

Project tasks

  • Project audit
  • External advice
  • Second opinion
  • Mediation

Our Approach

Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ) is procuring a new depot management system (BMS) from PSI Transcom GmbH to control its tram depots and bus garages. PROSE carried out an independent project audit on behalf of both parties. The audit aimed to determine whether the project was being handled by both parties in accordance with the requirements for a project in the public transport sector. In addition, VBZ wanted to clarify the extent to which the supplier’s project organisation ensured qualitative and timely project execution. Furthermore, it should be clarified whether any suboptimal project organisation could result in additional financial expenditure on both sides.

PROSE carried out the audit in a two-stage process. In the first phase, both parties were interviewed on-site in an audit meeting about the key issues identified and their respective views were recorded. In a subsequent joint meeting, the first draft of the audit report, including the recommendations of the PROSE auditors, was used as the basis for an initial review. The second phase was organised by focusing on individual key topics in joint meetings of all three parties. Finally, the findings based on the audit report and the recommendations were discussed and finalised.

Customer benefit

VBZ and PSI benefited from the PROSE auditors’ independent perspective and experience in project management and operational issues. By analysing individual key topics, it was possible to illuminate the respective points of view and highlight the perspectives of both parties. As a result, both parties were able to identify potential for improvement in the collaboration.
