Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) strategy for rail

Project tasks

  • Developing a conformity strategy for the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)
  • Defining specific controls and mandatory processes
  • Supporting communication and documentation requirements towards original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
  • Establishing a practical approach for CRA implementation
  • Establishing security risk management
  • Assisting in defining CVD policy, vulnerability management process, intended purpose and integration constraints

Our approach

PROSE supported ErvoCom in developing a tailored strategy for compliance with the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). The existing compliance strategy, including product strategy, vulnerability management and reporting processes were analysed, and complemented with interviews involving management, product management and engineering.

In addition, we reviewed relevant sector guidance from UNIFE, VDB and the European Commission and used the findings to develop a documentation strategy and implementation approach. We also verified the proposed approach against the requirements of train manufacturers, adjusted the compliance timeline and supported the customer in resolving open implementation and compliance questions.

Customer benefit

ErvoCom gained a clear and tailored strategy for implementing the Cyber Resilience Act, with greater clarity on mandatory processes, controls and documentation requirements. The structured approach provides a basis for communicating CRA compliance towards train manufacturers and supports the scalability of the company’s compliance activities as its business develops.

PROSE provided an independent railway perspective across regulatory, product and engineering considerations, helping the customer translate compliance requirements into practical next steps.

TCMS cybersecurity assessment and approval

Customer: Newag, Poland

Project tasks

  • Supporting the customer throughout the V-model with a focus on cybersecurity
  • Assessing cybersecurity requirements relevant to the TCMS in accordance with IEC 62443 / TS 50701
  • Conducting high-level and detailed risk analyses, threat matrix assessments and CbC analyses
  • Defining security-related application conditions (SecRACs)
  • Supporting the assessment and approval process

Our approach

The cybersecurity assessment followed the methodology of IEC 62443 / TS 50701 and combined technical analysis, structured documentation and verification throughout the entire V-model. This ensured that cybersecurity aspects were integrated early into development, assessment and compliance activities.

The work included high-level and detailed risk analyses, threat matrix assessments, CbC analyses, SecRACs, and the development of the TCMS Technical Security Concept, covering network architecture, firewall configurations and system settings. In addition, incorporation of outcomes from external penetration tests have into the security concept have been made.

PROSE prepared the Security Case and supported the customer throughout the assessment and approval process. All analysis and evidence activities were consistently linked and documented in a traceable manner.

Customer benefit

NEWAG received structured support aligned with IEC 62443 / TS 50701 to address cybersecurity requirements during vehicle development and approval. Security risks could be identified and assessed at an early stage and addressed through appropriate technical and organisational measures.

The independent technical assessment also strengthened the evidence required for safety and cybersecurity compliance. By combining railway-system expertise with cybersecurity competence, PROSE helped ensure a consistent and traceable link between development, verification and approval activities.

Is there a better way to welcome spring than by coming together around a shared goal?

Last week, ten colleagues from our Västerås office took part in VårRuset – one of Sweden’s best-known running events for women.

Despite heavy rain throughout the afternoon, spirits stayed high. Just in time for the start, the sun broke through, turning the evening into a memorable experience of teamwork, energy and determination.

VårRuset is Sweden’s largest fitness tour for women, where participants can run, jog or walk 2.5 or 5 kilometres. Beyond the race itself, the event supports women’s health initiatives, with donations made each year to organisations working in this area.
We are proud of everyone who took part and the positive energy they brought to the event.

Account Manager France

PROSE is one of Europe’s leading partners for mobility engineering. We are an international team realizing A-Z projects for the refurbishment of railway vehicles, development projects for Railway Vehicle sub-systems and components, as well as advisory and consulting assignments.

To boost our development in France and French speaking neighbor countries, we are currently looking for an Account Manager France to join us on this mission.

Role Overview:

In this challenging role, you will be a key player in our team in charge of the acquisition of new customers and fostering our existing Railway customer base in France and neighboring countries. You build on your experience in the Railway market associated with a business developer mentality and a project culture, are autonomous and organized, understand technically complex subjects, strong communication skills, the ability to persuade and engage customers, a proven track record in building a quality pipeline along with successful closing skills. For the projects entrusted, you will use your management skills and sense of responsibility and accountability to successfully deliver with your team the contractual services to the full satisfaction of our customers.

Responsibilities:
  • Generate new business leads through various sales and marketing activities, including networking, marketing and email campaigns, cold calling
  • Conduct high-level conversations with decision-makers at Rail Operators and OEM’s to understand their business needs and present PROSE’s value offer
  • Deliver effective solution presentations to potential customers, showcasing PROSE’s unique solutions in engineering and consulting
  • Prepare successful proposals in response to tenders as well as unsolicited proposals
  • Manage multiple concurrent sales opportunities, prioritizing and organizing efforts to maximize success
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project and marketing, to drive new solution development and customer retention
  • Accurately forecast and track sales pipeline and revenue
  • Reach or exceed annual sales targets
  • Acting as the main customer interface for the contracted projects
  • Successful organization, management and delivery of the projects in line with the contractual quality, financial and schedule targets, both from the customer perspective as towards the company.
Requirements:
  • Technical University or Engineering School degree, preferably in electrical or mechanical engineering
  • Solid experience in railway vehicle engineering
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in sales or business development as well as project management roles,
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial attitude
  • Excellent presentation skills, with the ability to effectively articulate the value proposition of our solutions
  • Excellent organizational, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Natural leadership and management of multicultural project teams
  • Ability to think creatively and develop new sales strategies to achieve business goals
  • Native French and fluency in English are mandatory, German language is a plus
  • Experienced user of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), Project Management suites as well as of CRM systems

2038 problem: What happens when time runs out?

The 2038 problem is a hidden risk in legacy computer systems that store time as a 32-bit Unix timestamp. On 19 January 2038, this counter will overflow, causing systems to jump back to 1901.

This jump backwards is expected to cause many software systems to crash or run into an unpredictable behaviour. And this is not theoretical! It may already affect systems that calculate future dates or that have a design life beyond 2037.

In rail, where precise timing underpins safe and reliable operations, this creates a hidden but critical risk across onboard and infrastructure systems, maintenance tools, etc. The key question is not if, but where.

While the event is “still” 12 years away, it is actually tomorrow, considering that the Rail Industry, like several others, are known to be slow-moving when it comes to such massive system upgrades.

Our approach

PROSE began with a structured review of the Rc6 high-voltage system, analysing design documentation, component specifications, and historical modification records to establish the vehicle’s current technical baseline. Based on this analysis, we evaluated the impact of the increased maximum voltage on insulation coordination, component voltage margins, and protection systems. Where necessary, we developed alternative technical solutions to ensure compliance with the new operating conditions. Each option was assessed from both a technical and economic perspective, including feasibility, implementation effort, operational implications, and associated risks. The work was carried out in close dialogue with SJ as operator and Trafikverket as infrastructure owner to ensure transparency and alignment throughout the project.

Customer benefit

The customer gained a transparent and technically sound decision basis for operating the Rc6 fleet under increased overhead line voltage. Our independent assessment clarified voltage margins, component limitations, and protection requirements, creating full visibility of technical risks and modification needs.
By systematically comparing refurbishment scenarios, including cost and implementation implications, we enabled SJ and Trafikverket to prioritise measures based on safety, operational reliability, and long-term investment protection. With PROSE’s in-depth knowledge of Swedish rolling stock and infrastructure interfaces, the operators secured a technically robust and future-proof solution aligned with updated network standards.
