That is the question PROSE set out to answer in our latest project for the Berlin underground – and yesterday at the Modern Rolling Stock conference in Graz, PROSE-employee Bernhard Kurzeck presented our findings.
If you missed the speech, here’s a short recap for you:
We support our customers in developing long-term strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through concepts for optimised hybrid drives
To enable this, we analyse operations under various boundary conditions in detail
The solution focuses on proven components and established technologies, ensuring reliable performance over many years of operation
A big thank-you to Bernhard Kurzeck for sharing your deep knowledge and interesting findings. We look forward to continuing the journey – helping operators and infrastructure owners shape more sustainable, reliable, and safe railway systems.

Last week, we hosted a re-opening and networking event at our new Berlin office address . An opportunity to meet, exchange ideas, and build on our connections – and enjoying some tasty food along the way.
Events like these are a reminder of why staying close to our customers and building strong networks matter. Together, we’re shaping the future of railway technology and driving innovation forward.
One highlight of the evening was the PROSE quiz, which sparked friendly competition and plenty of laughs. Congratulations to the winner from Siemens Mobility GmbH – we hope the 3D puzzle train brings some extra joy! Thank you to everyone who joined us – we are excited for the road ahead and the opportunities to collaborate even further!
Digitalisation in the rail sector is progressing rapidly and the challenges in cybersecurity are growing with it. Many companies are faced with the question: how can IT systems and infrastructures be effectively protected when existing standards only offer limited guidance?
As part of a specialised cybersecurity awareness workshop, PROSE shed light on current challenges and proven solutions. Together with the participants, we analysed the status quo, compared security strategies with current standards and developed concrete next steps.
We focussed in particular on three key questions:
How can companies prepare for new specifications such as NIS-2 or IEC 62443?
Are the roles and responsibilities in projects clearly defined or does this unintentionally create security gaps?
How can cybersecurity be ensured across the entire value chain?
With targeted analyses and practical recommendations, we support our customers in anchoring cybersecurity as an integral part of their digital strategy. Threats are constantly evolving – it’s high time we did the same.
PROSE experts will teach the “Dynamics of Rail Vehicles—Theory” lecture at the Technische Universität Berlin (Technical University of Berlin) from summer semester 2025. The lecture teaches the theoretical principles of vehicle dynamics of rail vehicles and their calculation by computer simulation. The focus is on wheel/rail contact, vibration behaviour during running and the special features of curving.
Why is this important?
Understanding rail vehicle dynamics is key to making trains safer, more stable, and more comfortable. By combining theory with our real-world experience, we can give students practical insights into the challenges they will face as future engineers. And teaching isn’t a one-way street – we also learn a lot from the questions and fresh ideas that students bring.
We are excited to share our knowledge and help train the next generation of railway engineers!
Our team – Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernhard Kurzeck (already an honorary professor at TU Berlin), Dr.-Ing. Johannes Keudel, and Dr.-Ing. André Theiler – will take over from Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oldrich Polach, who taught the lecture for many years and is now passing it on to the next generation of experts.
Earning Trafikverket’s trust in all three areas we applied for highlights our role as a key partner in the railway sector.
For Trafikverket, this means access to our expertise in:
Technical consulting for rail vehicles
Fleet management support
Documentation management systems
We continue shaping tomorrow’s mobility by ensuring efficient, reliable, and well-managed rail vehicles.
We are looking forward to contributing to Sweden’s railway infrastructure with our knowledge and hands-on experience!
Did you know? 7.9% of the world’s railway industry trade is “made in Austria”, and the country ranks 4th worldwide in rail vehicle exports! (ref: https://vcoe.at/grafiken)
At PROSE, we’re proud to be part of this success story. With decades of experience in Austria, we have contributed to projects ranging from vehicle development to authorisation and system integration. Our expertise helps shape tomorrow’s mobility—making trains more efficient, safe and sustainable.
Meet the experts! We will be at the Modern Rolling Stock conference in Graz, ready to share insights and discuss what’s next for the industry.
How can we ensure the security of digital systems in today’s rail networks?
What steps are needed to streamline vehicle authorisation processes across borders?
How will cybersecurity evolve to keep pace with the increasing complexity of rail systems?
Because complex regulation and stakeholders not yet used on how to handle the approval processes in line with current regulation generates risk of delays and unplanned costs. A recent regulatory update in Germany could make a difference. More on this- in German – below! ⬇️
An ECM organisation can implement the ECM regulation in a way that aligns with its specific needs.
Strengthening information exchange between railway undertakings and ECMs is important for improving maintenance specifications.
At PROSE, we were excited to contribute to these discussions— Dr. Bernhard Frei explored strategies for digitising historic railway vehicles, and Lukas Müller led a workshop on enhancing information sharing in ECM maintenance development.
A big thank you to the organisers and participants for making this event a valuable experience! Let’s keep the conversation going.
