What’s the best long-term solution for construction service vehicles in underground networks?

That is the question PROSE set out to answer in our latest project for the Berlin underground – and yesterday at the Modern Rolling Stock conference in Graz, PROSE-employee Bernhard Kurzeck presented our findings.

If you missed the speech, here’s a short recap for you:

  • We support our customers in developing long-term strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through concepts for optimised hybrid drives
  • To enable this, we analyse operations under various boundary conditions in detail
  • The solution focuses on proven components and established technologies, ensuring reliable performance over many years of operation

A big thank-you to Bernhard Kurzeck for sharing your deep knowledge and interesting findings. We look forward to continuing the journey – helping operators and infrastructure owners shape more sustainable, reliable, and safe railway systems.

Austria is a global leader in railway technology

Did you know? 7.9% of the world’s railway industry trade is “made in Austria”, and the country ranks 4th worldwide in rail vehicle exports! (ref: https://vcoe.at/grafiken)

At PROSE, we’re proud to be part of this success story. With decades of experience in Austria, we have contributed to projects ranging from vehicle development to authorisation and system integration. Our expertise helps shape tomorrow’s mobility—making trains more efficient, safe and sustainable.

Meet the experts! We will be at the Modern Rolling Stock conference in Graz, ready to share insights and discuss what’s next for the industry.

  • How can we ensure the security of digital systems in today’s rail networks?
  • What steps are needed to streamline vehicle authorisation processes across borders?
  • How will cybersecurity evolve to keep pace with the increasing complexity of rail systems?

Join us for a conversation!

13th–15th April 2025 at Messe Graz.

How secure is your railway system against cyber threats?

With increasing digitalisation, cybersecurity in rail is no longer optional — it is a must. Protecting rolling stock, control- and communication systems from cyber risks is a growing challenge.

Join us at the 11th Rail Cybersecurity Summit in London on 11-12 March, where industry leaders will tackle the latest challenges in securing railway technology. Claudius Multmeier from PROSE will be there to exchange insights and solutions on how PROSE can support you in:

  • Cybersecurity workshops for rolling stock operators and manufacturers
  • Implementation of TS 50701 for manufacturers
  • Compliance with IEC 62443 / TS 50701
  • Independent reviews of cybersecurity concepts and architectures
  • Security requirements for train procurement and retrofits

Event Date: 11-12 March 2025

Looking back at the ECM Experience exchange – a unique platform for collaboration!

On 24 January, we had the privilege of joining experts from across the railway industry in Olten to discuss the past, present, and future of railway maintenance. From Federal Office of Transport FOT  and SUST to major railway companies like BLS AG and SBB CFF FFS, as well as associations like International Union of Wagon Keepers (UIP), VPI – Verband der Güterwagenhalter in Deutschland e. V., and Die Zentralbahn – the event brought together key stakeholders to exchange insights and ideas.

Key takeaways:

  • An ECM organisation can implement the ECM regulation in a way that aligns with its specific needs.
  • Strengthening information exchange between railway undertakings and ECMs is important for improving maintenance specifications.

At PROSE, we were excited to contribute to these discussions— Dr. Bernhard Frei explored strategies for digitising historic railway vehicles, and Lukas Müller led a workshop on enhancing information sharing in ECM maintenance development.

A big thank you to the organisers and participants for making this event a valuable experience! Let’s keep the conversation going.

A Glimpse into PROSE’s Engineering Day Highlights

At PROSE, we believe that building strong, collaborative teams is key to delivering great value to our customers. Our teamwork ensures that we bring the best of our collective skills to every project, improving the quality and reliability of our solutions.

In November, we showed our dedication to innovation in railway technology during our two-day event, Engineering Day. Our teams focused on important topics that are fundamental to improving project outcomes and customer satisfaction.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Basic signalling: Discussed the importance of signalling for safety and efficiency in railway operations.
  • Alternative drive systems: Highlighted progress towards sustainable solutions and their impact on future rail vehicles.
  • Vehicle Authorisation – Maintenance vs. Modification: Covered key points for navigating regulatory frameworks in vehicle engineering.
  • ETCS Onboard Units: Looked at the latest advancements in ETCS technology and its role in improving rail transport safety and efficiency.

By fostering a collaborative environment, we ensure that each team member contributes to and benefits from the collective knowledge and skills. This approach not only improves our internal capabilities but also translates into better service and innovative solutions for our customers, we call it the “prose.one-approach”.

How PROSE solves the “Old depot, new fleet?” dilemma

Last week, we had the opportunity to share our expertise at the IHRUS conference. PROSE employee Tobias Hoppe shed light on the complex interplay between existing depots and new fleet orders and showed how innovative approaches can create solutions.

Here are the three most important take-home messages from his presentation:

  • Mastering challenges: Flexibility and innovative adaptations are the key to making old workshops fit for new requirements.
  • Involve employees: On-site knowledge and precise simulations lay the foundation for successful planning.
  • Shaping the future: Automation and flexibility ensure efficient and sustainable workshop concepts for tomorrow.

Many thanks to all participants for the inspiring exchange! Together we are shaping the future of railway technology.
